Well part of the problem, is the fact that there are so many people that don't read the forums, and don't try to help themselves. You and I might have legitimate problems that require the attention of the coder, but 50 others might have a simple problem that just a little browsing of the forum would tell them how to fix. This as I am sure gets very frustrating, and takes time away from people that really require help that the forum and such cannot provide.
A good example of this is Microsoft. I know it's a bit far fetched but you can browse the Microsoft forums for free, and read about how to do just about anything, fix any problem. It's an option for those who have the time, and want to try to help themselves. Now keep in mind those people bought Windows. Even if it's bundled, you still pay for it. If Microsoft gave free lifetime tech support they would already be out of business.
